ALLEGED FALSE PRETENCES
William McMeish, a brickmaker of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to obtaining £7 by false pretences.
Supt. Hoyle explained that prisoner borrowed £7 from Walter Willey, a confectioner, Elland, and in return gave him a cheque. At the time however, he had only 2s. 6d. standing to his credit at the bank.
Prisoner, who said he would pay back what he had borrowed if given time, asked that a charge of stealing machinery and other things valued at £200 and a further charge of obtaining £21 by false pretences should be taken into consideration.
Prisoner was committed to four months hard labour.
