 | Military - P.O.W. 17 Feb 1942 - 25 Apr 1943 During World War II and after the Fall of Singapore, Changi Prison became notorious for its role as a prisoner-of-war camp for Allied soldiers captured by the Japanese. During the occupation, the Japanese used the prison to house prisoners of war (POW) captured from all over the Asia-Pacific. Many of these prisoners were subjected to brutal treatment and forced labour, and a significant number died from malnutrition, disease, and mistreatment. - 17 Feb 1942 - Changhi P.O.W. Camp, Singapore |

 | Military - P.O.W. 25 May - Nov 1943 Few prisoners of war, whatever their age or rank, can have endured a more harrowing experience than his, which included six months in the notorious camp at Songkurai, from which there emerged only 112 survivors of a British contingent originally numbering 1200. This contingent was responsible for the construction of a 15 kilometre stretch of the Burma-Siam railway which included a bridge over the River Kwai, a bridge made famous by the Hollywood film of that title which, unfortunately, projected an altogether misleading impression of the prisoners' relationship with their Japanese captors. - 25 May 1943 - Sonkurai P.O.W. Camp, Thailand |
 |
 | Military - Nov 1943 - 25 Apr 1944 A POW hospital camp was established at Kanchanaburi when the railway line construction had been completed. Men were brought back to these camps on stretchers off river barges or the railway.
