"It's a family thing!"
Family trees that begin in Dorset, Yorkshire, Hertfordshire, & London, spreading around the World.

Welcome!

I started wondering about my family history many years ago, I grew up in Bournemouth on the south coast. My father is from a Dorset family but in her early teens my mother Marlene and her family moved south from Halifax in Yorkshire, this was shortly after the end of World War II.

So from childhood I have been told stories about my Yorkshire family only meeting very few of the people involved.

I had many converstations with mum about our families past and we'd have lot's of chats about discoveries I had made online sparking off a few childhood memories for her and my own interest just grew and grew.

Latest Discoveries

I'm constantly adding to the site, trying to build up as much of a story about each individual as I go along.

Here are some of my recent discoveries:

Brian Victor Foot (1887-2002)
Brian was my 1st Cousin 2 x removed & was a teacher from Ipswich. In WWII he was a Lieutenant in the army and was captured and taken prisoner in Malaya (1942). Documents show he was sent to Thailand and worked building part of the railway that included the well known "Bridge on the River Kwai", of the 1200 POW's sent here only 112 survived. more ....

Annie Gould (1878-1955)
Annie was my Great Grandmother (the mother of my mothers father). Since I very first started researching my family history I have been unable to confirm much about her as all documents I have come across give conflicting information.
I am now quite sure she was born in Birmingham on 25 Dec 1877 but have a lot of conflicting evidence that says otherwise.
1905 Marriage certificate states age 23 (suggests 1882 as birth year) & deceased father Thomas Gould, a dock yard worker
1911 Census age 30 (suggests 1882) born in Birmingham
1921 Census shows age 39 (suggests 1882) Born in Preston (I assume this should actually be "Aston" which is an area of Birmingham
1939 Register her birth date is 7 Mar 1886
She lived in Halifax and Middlesbrough with husband David William Keitch
Annie Died of cancer on the 27th August 1955 at St. Johns Hospital, Halifax, Yorkshire.
Recently I have come across two DNA matches to myself that have helped to make this story a little clearer.
Looks like Annie was born 25 Dec 1877 to Edward Gould & Ruth Spriggs, Edward died rather violently in an accident when Annie was a child and the 1891 census shows her living with her mother and Grandfather, Thomas Spriggs.
A most puzzling history that has kept me searching for over two decades may finally be coming to a closure. (still bothered by the difference in dates though!)

Useful Resources

As I search the internet looking for more information to add I am finding some very useful websites. At the moment I am pretty much focused on my Halifax, Yorkshire ancestors & family and there are some particularly useful places I have found along the way.

Calderdale Family History Society A great site with tons of information. The purpose of the Society is to encourage and support research into the history of families with roots in the area. Calderdale is located in the foothills of the Pennines in West Yorkshire, England.
Membership is inexpensive and gives you access to many records that you won't find anywhere else.

Malcolm Bull's Calderdale Companion The amount of information available for free on this website is staggering! A most useful tool for any research into the Halifax area.
